Open letter to the President of the APEEE Woluwe

UPDATE October 13, 2021:

There is a follow-up to this letter.

Open letter for the attention of Mr Houghton-Clarke, President of the APEEE Woluwe

I hope this letter finds you well.

I would like to start by making it clear to you and to whoever else may read this letter, that we have never met and neither have we ever had the opportunity to talk and discuss any matters in person – not even by phone or via other digital means of communication. It is therefore safe to conclude that we don’t know each other, or are even acquainted. Continue reading Open letter to the President of the APEEE Woluwe

Where is our EGM?

Yes, APEEE Board, where is our Extraordinary General Meeting?

Before anything I must admit something… I almost gave this title to this post: The curious case of the missing EGM… But then I thought I should not challenge yet again Saint Anthony, the patron Saint of missing things. He has already been so kind to find the missing bus monitors last June and I’m sure that after a good and well deserved summer vacation,  he is now a bit rusty on finding stuff!!! 😇 Continue reading Where is our EGM?

The conflict of interest is over!!! Err… not quite…

UPDATE December 21, 2021:

If there were any doubts that the current board doesn’t give a damn about conflicts of interest while proposing a Code of Conduct that actually includes a section on the matter, then these doubts have just dissipated… The Board member that has been discussed in the article below and in the original post as having a blatant conflict of interest, participated and voted positively on the APEEE Budget for the current financial year of 2021/2022, which means he effectively voted to have his APEEE revenues increased.

Rejoice O people, for conflict of interest is nearly over in the APEEE… But mind the nearly! Continue reading The conflict of interest is over!!! Err… not quite…

An acute case of surreal confidentiality…

If the Brussels afternoon of Friday June 18th 2021 was already hot, it became even hotter when I started reading this rather interesting letter by Mr. Marcheggiano, the Secretary General of the European Schools. 😎

The letter landed on The Woluwe Diaries desk around mid-late afternoon. In it, Mr. Marcheggiano explained the position of the Office of the Secretary General on the 180 days discussion. I will not bother you with the details of the arguments because you can read it yourself right here. Continue reading An acute case of surreal confidentiality…

The great turnaround!

In a quite successful attempt at mastering the obvious, the APEEE Woluwe announced in its message on Monday, that it decided to adapt its bus schedule for the period between 21 June and 1 July. This is a most spectacular 180 degree turn of events that, I’m sure, many, many parents were very happy to hear about. This decision will reduce the pandemic related health risks and will also ensure pupils will not have to suffer from the summer heat. Continue reading The great turnaround!

The curious case of the missing bus monitors…

…or how Brexit style cliff edge negotiation tactics go against parents’ interests

()

The decision of the European Schools in Brussels to cut teaching time by 7 half days during the last two weeks of the school year is by now the talk of the town.

The argument to support this decision was that after more than a year of pandemic conditions, teachers are exhausted. The European Schools (ES) do not want to further strain teachers by having late afternoon class councils which, under normal circumstances, often go on beyond 21h. Who is the CEO of the school?

On the unusually sunny morning of 23 May 2021, The Woluwe Diaries bumped into a rather curious tweet (English translation). As knowledgeable as these Diaries are about how the Woluwe EEB2 parents association (APEEE) tends to operate, I thought it would be helpful to put this tweet into some context. This should be a wake up call to the entire parents community.

Below you will find a Q&A that tries to shed some light on this letter.  Now, without further ado, please read on. Continue reading Who is the CEO of the school?

The curious case of the missing minutes…

UPDATE October 26, 2021:

There is a follow-up to this post.

Those who still remember the long gone month of November 2020, may also recall the rather unfortunate events that went on at the EEB2 APEEE Extraordinary Board meeting that took place on the 4th of that month.

If you don’t remember… then, tough luck! I say “tough luck” because the minutes of that meeting have disappeared from the website of our association.

Definition of conflict of interest with a blatant example

Imagine for instance the mayor of a city who owns a shop in a nice area of town and decides to make the street where her business is located more attractive to potential customers: enlarging the sidewalks, developing the street greenery, improving the lightning for the dark winter evenings, etc. At the same time, other areas of the city, in dire need of infrastructure renewal, are neglected.
